Artur Nacht-Samborski

ARTUR NACHT SAMBORSKI (b. 1898- d. 1974)
Studied in the studio of professor Wojciech Weiss at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow. During the stay in Berlin he was involved in the circle of Expressionists and Dadaists. Since 1924 he was in Paris where he was one of the Capists. Between 1941 and 1942 he was in Lwów Ghetto. In 1942 he travelled to Cracow and then to Warsaw where he was hiding under the name Stefan Samborski. He painted still lifes, landscapes and nudes, among others: A Woman at the Table (1960-1961), Leaves on the Purple Wall (1966) and Still Life (1962). He received the prize of the national second level.
Nacht Samborski's work was  influenced by German Expressionism and Polish colourism, so called capism. The artist skillfully combined colors, bringing from them expressive tones and nuances. It is an example of an outstanding painting, sometimes mysterious, ambiguous, escaping from any definitions.
