Józef Wilkoń
JÓZEF WILKOŃ (b. 1930). A graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, where he earned his diploma in 1955 in the studio of Professor Adam Marczyński. He also studied art history at the Jagiellonian University (graduating in 1954). In his artistic practice, he primarily focuses on illustration, painting, and sculpture, increasingly reaching for spatial forms created in wood and sheet metal over time.
His works are characterized by extraordinary lightness, technical virtuosity, and a synthetic, expressive gesture. The main theme of his art is nature, particularly animals, whose images he constructs with incredible sensitivity to their movement and character. These depictions, far from anatomical literalism, take on traits of almost human emotionality on paper and in physical space. Józef Wilkoń's output is a kind of poetic bestiary, in which the key issues are vitality, synthesis of form, and capturing the hidden life of nature.
The artist analyzes the psychology and motor skills of the animal world, confronting the viewer with the wildness of nature, as well as its lyrical, fairy-tale beauty. He imbues his works with an aura of gentle tension, often intentionally broken by anecdote and subtle humor. His art balances between painterly expression and sculptural rawness, visually drawing from the aesthetics of Far Eastern ink painting (sumi-e) and the tradition of the Polish School of Illustration, of which he is one of the most prominent co-creators.
Józef Wilkoń has held dozens of solo exhibitions worldwide, including: "Wilkoń's Ark" at the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw (2006), exhibitions at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1989), the Urawa Art Museum in Japan (2001), and the Museum of Picture Books in Oshima. His works are included in major institutional collections (e.g., the National Museum in Warsaw, the Internationale Jugendbibliothek in Munich, and numerous museums in Japan) and are regularly presented at international exhibitions and global book fairs.
