Karolina Jabłońska

KAROLINA JABŁOŃSKA (b. 1991). A graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, she completed her studies in 2015 under Professor Leszek Misiak. She also studied at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design (UMPRUM) in Prague. In 2015, together with Tomasz Kręcicki and Cyryl Polaczek, she co-founded "Potencja," an independent gallery and artist collective based in Kraków. Her practice focuses primarily on painting, though she occasionally explores spatial forms.

Her paintings are characterized by a vivid—often garish—color palette and a bold, expressive painterly gesture. A recurring theme in her work is the depiction of young women, most often taking the form of large-scale, exaggerated self-portraits. These images reference everyday domestic situations and mundane activities, which, upon the canvas, take on the qualities of unsettling phenomena. Karolina Jabłońska’s paintings function as a kind of visual diary, centering on themes of physicality, female identity, and intense emotional states.

The artist examines the position and experiences of young women in the contemporary world, confronting the viewer with a blend of vulnerability and predatory intensity. She imbues her work with an atmosphere of psychological tension, often deliberately disrupted by elements of the grotesque and dark humor. Her work balances between brutal honesty and a pop-culture aesthetic, drawing visual inspiration from comic books and film stills.

Karolina Jabłońska has held numerous solo exhibitions, including "Cold" at Lyles & King in New York (2022), "No Rest For The Weary" at Lyles & King (2021), and "Ślisko" at Raster Gallery in Warsaw (2020), as well as shows at the Steve Turner gallery in Los Angeles. Her works are held in significant institutional collections (such as the National Museum in Gdańsk) and are regularly featured in exhibitions abroad and at international art fairs.
