Stanisław Baj

STANISŁAW BAJ (b. 1953). A graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he earned his diploma with distinction in 1978 under Professor Ludwik Maciąg. For decades associated with his alma mater as an outstanding educator, professor, and long-standing Vice-Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He is the recipient of numerous artistic awards, including the Medal of the Main Board of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP) and the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. His artistic practice focuses primarily on easel painting, as well as drawing.

His paintings are characterized by extraordinary light sensitivity, a rich impasto texture, and a unique synthesis of abstraction and realism. The central themes of his work revolve around monumental landscapes of the Bug River—depicted at various times of day and across seasons—and portraits of the inhabitants of his native village of Dołhobrody, including a poignant series dedicated to the artist's mother. These depictions refer to the timeless rhythms of nature, transience, and deeply rooted cultural identity. Stanisław Baj's paintings serve as a contemplative study of the element of water and the human face, in which key motifs include light, space, and a spiritual connection to his homeland.

The artist analyzes the boundary between material reality and its pictorial reduction, confronting the viewer with the raw majesty of the river landscape and the profound focus of his portrait subjects. He imbues his works with an aura of tranquility, metaphysical reflection, and solemnity, often achieved through chiaroscuro contrasts and dense paint application. His oeuvre balances between classical landscape painting and a modern, synthetic form, drawing visual inspiration from Polish Colorism and native expressive traditions.

Stanisław Baj has held numerous solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad, including at the National Museum in Lublin, the State Art Gallery in Sopot, and various municipal and private galleries in Germany, France, and Greece. His works are included in major museum collections (including the National Museum in Warsaw, the Museum of Art in Łódź, and the Podlasie Museum in Białystok) as well as private collections in Poland and worldwide.
