Stefan Gierowski
STEFAN GIEROWSKI (born in 1925)
Polish abstraction painter. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Zbigniew Pronaszko and Karol Frycz. Since 1976, he has been a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Initially, he practiced figurative painting, and later turned towards abstraction.
He never gives titles to his paintings - he just calls them "paintings" and numbers them with roman numerals. His paintings are inspired by abstraction, Art Informel and postconstructivism but they can not be fully qualified as representatives of one of these styles.
Gierowski is a laureate of many awards, among others, the Jan Cybis Award for his lifetime achievements (1980) and the Kazimierz Ostrowski Prize for outstanding achievements in the field of painting (2005).
