Teresa Pągowska

TERESA PĄGOWSKA (1926–2007). An outstanding Polish painter and educator. Between 1946 and 1951, she studied painting and mural techniques at the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Poznań under Professor Wacław Taranczewski. She was one of the pivotal figures of post-war Polish art, associated with the historic Arsenal exhibition in Warsaw (1955) and the international figuration movements of the 1960s. For many years, she was dedicated to teaching—first at the State Higher School of Visual Arts in Gdańsk, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where she was awarded the title of Full Professor in 1988. Her artistic practice focused primarily on easel painting.

Her paintings are characterized by an extraordinary sense of form, a restrained color palette, and a condensed synthesis of shape. The central theme of her work was the human figure—almost exclusively female—rendered in a synthetic, understated anatomical shortcut. These depictions refer to intimate psychological states, solitude, and the mutability of the human body, which on her canvases transform into universal metaphors. Teresa Pągowska's paintings serve as a profound study of human existence, in which key motifs include corporeality, the space surrounding the figure, and its relationship with the environment.

The artist analyzes the dynamics of movement, gesture, and pause within the pictorial composition, confronting the viewer with both the monumentality and fragility of the depicted figures. She imbues her works with an aura of mystery, understatement, and solemnity, often intentionally disrupted by a free, bold color field or raw, expressive line. Her oeuvre balances between figuration and abstraction, drawing visual inspiration from modernism and the tradition of Polish Colorism transformed into a uniquely recognizable formal language.

Teresa Pągowska held numerous solo exhibitions and participated in prestigious international art events, including the São Paulo Art Biennial (1965) and the Venice Biennale (1966), as well as major retrospectives at the Zachęta – National Gallery of Art in Warsaw and the National Museum in Poznań. Her works are included in major museum collections across Poland (including the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Poznań, Wrocław, and Gdańsk) as well as numerous private collections at home and abroad.
