Józef Czapski

JÓZEF CZAPSKI (1896–1993). He began his artistic education in Warsaw under Stanisław Lentz, before continuing his painting studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under Wojciech Weiss and Józef Pankiewicz. In 1924, as a co-founder of the Paris Committee (the Kapists group), he moved to Paris, where he refined his technique by studying the works of Old Masters and French Post-Impressionists. Following World War II, he settled permanently in France, where he co-founded the influential emigré journal "Kultura" in Maisons-Laffitte. In addition to painting, he was an accomplished writer, essayist, and art critic.   His painting style evolved from Kapist colorism toward a deeply personal, expressive idiom. Czapski’s canvases are characterized by simplified, synthetic forms, bold cropping, and a pure, saturated color palette built upon strong contrasts of tone and light. The primary subjects of his work are intimate scenes from daily life—interiors of cafés, cinemas, theaters, museum halls, and solitary figures in urban spaces—rendered without decorative excess.   In his compositions, the artist focused on capturing fleeting visual impressions and the quiet solitude of the individual in the modern world. Employing subtle deformation, flat planes of color, and strong contours, he elevated mundane situations into existential meditations. An essential complement to his visual oeuvre are his multi-volume, richly illustrated "Diaries", which record a lifelong observation of reality. Józef Czapski held numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally, including presentations at the Galerie Bénézit in Paris, the Grabowski Gallery in London, the Sagittarius Gallery in New York, and the National Museum in Poznań. He was a recipient of the prestigious Jan Cybis Award (1990). His works are held in major public and private collections, including the National Museum in Kraków (featuring the dedicated Józef Czapski Pavilion), the National Museum in Warsaw, and the Museum of Art in Łódź.   If you have artworks by the artist for sale, please contact us.
