Wojciech Fangor
WOJCIECH FANGOR (1921–2015). He studied drawing and painting privately under Tadeusz Pruszkowski and Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski, receiving an extramural diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1949. In the 1960s, he left Poland to live and work abroad, including in West Berlin, Paris, and the United States, where he taught at several art institutes for many years. He returned permanently to Poland in 1999. He remains one of the most versatile and internationally acclaimed Polish artists of the 20th century.
His painterly practice evolved from Social Realism and traditional figuration toward pioneering explorations in Optical Art (Op-Art) and spatial art. Fangor co-created the world’s first spatial environment (A Study of Space, 1958, together with Stanisław Zamecznik). He gained international renown for his iconic canvases featuring soft-edged, blurred circles, waves, and rosettes in pulsating colors, through which he examined the interactions between color, light, and viewer perception. In his later creative periods, he produced notable series such as the "Television Paintings", as well as works engaging with spatial collage and sculpture.
In his oeuvre, the artist continuously investigated the illusion of depth, the optical effect of form on the space surrounding the canvas, and the sensory impact of art on the viewer. He combined a rigorous approach to composition and color with an innovative treatment of space as an integral component of the artwork.
Wojciech Fangor is the only Polish artist to have been honored with a solo exhibition at the prestigious Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York (1970). His works have been showcased in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions at leading international institutions, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York. His paintings are held in major public and private collections in Poland and worldwide.
